Bare Muzzle, Muzzle Brake, or Suppressor?

Suppressor and muzzle device lineup at 701 Enterprises

Which One Is Right for Your Rifle System?

Start With the Mission

One of the most common questions we hear is: “Should I put a suppressor on my rifle?” Our answer is almost always another question: What are you trying to accomplish?

There is no single right answer. Every rifle has a purpose, every hunter has different priorities, and every muzzle setup brings its own advantages and tradeoffs.

There is no universal best. There is only the system that best fits what you are trying to accomplish.

Experience Matters

At 701 Enterprises, we do not currently sell suppressors. That allows us to have these conversations without steering someone toward a particular brand.

Our opinions do not come from internet forums or marketing brochures. They come from years of real-world hunting, shooting, and evaluation. Our firsthand experience includes suppressor systems from Silencer Central, SilencerCo, Dead Air, Gunwerks, Thunder Beast Arms Corporation (TBAC), Offgrid, Yankee Hill Machine (YHM), and Q. We have also spent considerable time using suppressor-compatible muzzle brake systems from Recoil X and Area 419.

That breadth of experience has reinforced the same lesson repeatedly: brand matters, but application matters more.

Option 1: Bare Muzzle

Sometimes the best answer is doing nothing. For hunters who fire only a handful of rounds each season, simplicity may be the strongest feature.

ADVANTAGES

  • Lightest possible setup
  • Shortest overall rifle
  • No added cost
  • No device maintenance

TRADEOFFS

  • More felt recoil
  • Greater muzzle blast
  • Louder report

Best fit: Hunters prioritizing low weight, compact handling, simplicity, and minimal cost.

Option 2: Muzzle Brake

A quality muzzle brake can dramatically reduce felt recoil. For precision shooters, that can make it easier to stay in the scope and watch bullet impact.

ADVANTAGES

  • Strong recoil reduction
  • Easier impact spotting
  • Less shooter fatigue
  • No NFA process

TRADEOFFS

  • Increased blast and concussion
  • Very loud to the shooter and bystanders
  • Can be unpleasant for guides, partners, and range neighbors

Best fit: Shooters whose top priorities are recoil control, target visibility, and rifle stability.

Option 3: Suppressor

Suppressors have become popular for good reason. They do not make centerfire rifles silent, but they can make them significantly more comfortable to shoot.

ADVANTAGES

  • Reduced muzzle blast
  • Reduced recoil
  • Improved communication while hunting
  • Less hearing exposure
  • More comfortable shooting experience

TRADEOFFS

  • Added weight
  • Increased overall length
  • Heat buildup
  • Higher cost
  • Legal and transfer requirements

Best fit: Hunters and shooters who value reduced blast, better comfort, and a more refined overall shooting experience.

The 701 Philosophy

We do not believe every rifle needs a suppressor. We do not believe every rifle needs a brake. We do not believe expensive automatically means better.

We believe every component should serve a purpose. That is what separates buying accessories from building a rifle system.

The best muzzle setup is not necessarily the most expensive, the quietest, or the most popular. It is the one that best supports your mission.

Final Thoughts

If you ask us, “Should I buy a suppressor?” we will probably ask several questions before offering an opinion. Your hunting style, shooting goals, rifle weight, barrel length, cartridge, and tolerance for added length all matter more than a logo engraved on the side of a device.

That is how rifle systems should be built: one thoughtful decision at a time.

At 701 Enterprises, our goal is not to sell you the most products. It is to help you make informed decisions. Whether you are choosing a rifle, optic, muzzle brake, suppressor, or complete rifle system, we believe education should come before the purchase.

Knowledge before the purchase. Confidence after the sale.
Precision. Performance. Trust.
