“½ MOA GUARANTEE.”
Those words get attention.
When you're comparing precision or hunting rifles, an accuracy guarantee can be reassuring. It tells you the manufacturer is willing to put a measurable standard behind the rifle they're selling.
But there's an important distinction: an accuracy guarantee tells you something about the rifle. It doesn't tell you everything about the rifle system — and it certainly doesn't guarantee what will happen when you get behind it.
So what are you actually buying when a rifle comes with an accuracy guarantee? And how much should that guarantee influence your decision?
A ½-MOA rifle isn't automatically a better hunting rifle than a ¾-MOA rifle. An accuracy guarantee can demonstrate the mechanical capability of a rifle under certain conditions — it doesn't tell you how easy the rifle is for you to shoot, how it behaves from field positions, how it performs with every ammunition choice, or where the first shot will land. Mechanical precision matters. But it's only one piece of the system.
First: What Does MOA Actually Tell Us?
MOA — minute of angle — is an angular measurement. One MOA is approximately 1.047 inches at 100 yards. For practical conversation, most shooters simply call it one inch at 100.
So a rifle consistently producing roughly a ½-inch group at 100 yards is commonly described as a ½-MOA rifle. Stretch the distance and the angular measurement remains the same while the group size measured in inches increases:
- ½ MOA ≈ 0.5″ at 100 yards
- ½ MOA ≈ 1″ at 200 yards
- ½ MOA ≈ 2″ at 400 yards
That's useful information. But there's a mistake we sometimes make: we take that one measurement and use it to judge the entire rifle.
What Is Actually Being Guaranteed?
This is where buyers need to read the manufacturer's actual guarantee. Not every accuracy guarantee means exactly the same thing.
A manufacturer may specify a particular number of shots, specific ammunition, factory or match ammunition, a particular distance, certain shooting conditions, a specific testing procedure, or requirements regarding optics or rifle configuration.
That's not necessarily a problem. A manufacturer needs a repeatable standard if they're going to guarantee performance.
The details matter.
Three Shots Can Look Really Good
Group size also needs context.
A three-shot group has traditionally been common when evaluating hunting rifles. And three shots can provide useful information. But smaller sample sizes can also produce groups that look better — or worse — than the rifle's longer-term average.
Shoot enough groups and you'll probably eventually produce one that's exceptionally small. That's the one everybody wants to photograph.
What does the rifle do repeatedly?
We'd rather understand the rifle's normal performance than build our expectations around the smallest group it has ever fired. Repeatability builds confidence.
Ammunition Is Part of the Equation
We talked about this in 701 Knowledge #006, but it matters here too.
A precision rifle isn't operating by itself. The ammunition matters. Two quality factory loads using different bullets can produce noticeably different results from the same rifle. Even ammunition that performs exceptionally well in one rifle isn't guaranteed to perform identically in another.
That's why an accuracy guarantee doesn't eliminate ammunition testing. The rifle may have demonstrated that it is capable of exceptional precision. Your job is still to find and validate the ammunition that allows your particular rifle to demonstrate that capability consistently.
Mechanical Accuracy vs. Shooter Accuracy
This may be the most important distinction.
Imagine a rifle capable of consistently producing ½-MOA groups under controlled conditions. Now take away the solid bench. Put the shooter prone behind a bipod. Then kneeling. Then sitting. Then over a backpack. Add wind. Add an elevated heart rate. Add an awkward shooting angle. Add time pressure.
The rifle didn't suddenly become less mechanically precise. The shooting environment changed.
That's why we separate what the rifle is capable of from what the entire rifle-and-shooter system can produce. Both matter. But they're not the same measurement.
A ½-MOA Rifle Can Still Be Harder to Shoot
This connects directly to last week's discussion about lightweight rifles.
Imagine two hunting rifles. Rifle A is exceptionally light and mechanically capable of ½-MOA precision. Rifle B is slightly heavier and consistently produces ¾-MOA groups.
Which one would you rather hunt with? There isn't enough information to answer that yet.
What if you can shoot Rifle B significantly better from realistic field positions? What if its balance works better for you? What if you manage its recoil better? What if you can spot your own impacts more consistently?
What About the First Shot?
This is especially important for hunting rifles.
You can shoot an impressive group once the rifle and shooter have settled in. But where does the first shot land? For most hunters, that's the shot that matters.
That's why we like tracking first-round impacts across multiple range sessions. Not because every rifle necessarily has a meaningful cold-bore shift. But because we want to know.
Measure it instead of assuming it.
Accuracy Doesn't Fix Bad Data
Let's say you own a legitimate ½-MOA rifle. You have excellent ammunition. The rifle is zeroed correctly. Now you're preparing for a longer shot.
If your range is wrong, your solution can be wrong. If your muzzle velocity input is wrong, your solution can be wrong. If your atmospheric inputs are wrong, your solution can be wrong. If your wind call is wrong, the impact can be wrong.
The rifle can perform exactly as designed and the bullet can still miss the intended point.
Don't Buy the Group. Buy the Rifle.
Accuracy absolutely belongs on the list when comparing rifles. We care about precision. A rifle that consistently performs well gives the shooter a larger margin for confidence.
But don't become so focused on one specification that you ignore everything else:
- Fit — Does the rifle naturally position you behind the optic?
- Balance — Does it settle well from the positions you'll actually use?
- Weight — Can you comfortably carry it without making it unnecessarily difficult to shoot?
- Recoil — Can you maintain good fundamentals and stay in the optic?
- Cartridge — Does it fit the intended application and the rifle?
- Reliability — Does the system function consistently?
- Ammunition — Can you find a load the rifle repeatedly performs with?
And finally: Can you shoot it?
That's the specification that doesn't fit neatly into a manufacturer's catalog.
The Guarantee Still Matters
None of this means accuracy guarantees are meaningless. Quite the opposite.
When backed by a reputable manufacturer and clearly defined testing criteria, an accuracy guarantee can provide meaningful confidence in the mechanical capability of the rifle. It's a valuable benchmark. We simply shouldn't ask that benchmark to tell us something it can't.
A ½-MOA guarantee can tell us: this rifle is designed and built to meet a high standard of mechanical precision under the manufacturer's defined testing conditions.
What it cannot tell us is: this is automatically the best rifle for you. Only experience behind the rifle can answer that.
The 701 Take
We like accurate rifles. A lot.
Mechanical precision gives us a strong foundation to build from. But the smallest number printed beside “accuracy guarantee” shouldn't automatically win the comparison.
Read what the manufacturer actually guarantees. Find ammunition the rifle consistently likes. Confirm the zero. Measure the velocity. Validate the ballistic data. Shoot the rifle from realistic positions. Track the first shot. Learn how the rifle behaves under recoil. And determine whether you can consistently access the precision the rifle is capable of producing.
Because ultimately, you're not carrying an accuracy guarantee into the field. You are carrying a complete rifle system.
And when the opportunity comes, the size of the group printed in the catalog matters a lot less than knowing exactly what your rifle, your ammunition, and you can do together.
Mechanical precision is the starting point. Proven performance is the goal.
